Grandma is With Grandpa Now - April, 2010

Many of you know Rick and Nancee Moster Pontious drove to Phoenix every December to help Nancee's Grandma paint the town red, fill Grandma's refrigerator, freezer, and pantry with Sam's Club goodies; and run all the errands Grandma had been saving up since the previous year. (Click here, here, and here for past pics.)

Last December, Rick and Nancee had the painful task of packing up Grandma's apartment of 30 years and moving her to a nursing home in Cleveland, where she was closer to Nancee's mother, father, and cousins.

On April 11, 2010, Grandma joined Grandpa.

The obituary below doesn't begin to tell the story of Nancee's remarkable Grandma. Too many stories; too little space. There was no room for stories like how Grandma chauffeured Eleanor and James Roosevelt in her Cadillac convertible. And met Coretta Scott King.

Evelyn CohnEVELYN COHN
Published: Cleveland Jewish News, Thursday, April 15, 2010 12:28 PM EDT

Evelyn F. Cohn, who was active in many Jewish organizations, died recently at age 98. For 33 years, she volunteered at Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was a charter member of the women’s auxiliary. She held leadership positions in United Jewish Appeal National Women’s Division, Hadassah, Menorah Park, Women’s Division of Technion, the College of Jewish Studies (now Siegal College), Hillel Foundation, Israel Bonds women’s committee, and the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. With UJA women, Mrs. Cohn took three trips to Israel, where she met Golda Meir and David Ben-Gurion.

An avid bowler and sports fan, Mrs. Cohn enjoyed baseball, football, golf and basketball, especially the Phoenix Suns. Her creative interests included needlework, knitting, crocheting, painting and sculpture, and she had symphony tickets in both Phoenix and Cleveland.

Born in Chicago, Mrs. Cohn came to Cleveland in 1932. She managed a pediatrician’s office until 1948. Mrs. Cohn moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1978 and was a board member of Jewish Family & Children’s Service there for 28 years. In 2009, she returned to Cleveland.

Mrs. Cohn was predeceased by her husband Charles B. and daughter Ethel Reider. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Joseph) Moster; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Contributions are suggested to Jewish Family and Children’s Services, 4747 N. 7th St., Ste. 100, Phoenix, Ariz. 85014.

Meet Sammy - February, 2010

Meet Samantha - Sammy for short - who came to the Pontious Farm from Wisconsin and settled in immediately. Sammy is an eight-year-old Border Collie mix. Obviously the mix is Labrador Retriever. ;-)

Winter in East Central Illinois - February, 2010

Unfortunately, freezing fog, ice, and snow have been the norm this winter season in east central Illinois. But blue skies are NEVER the norm! That's why Nancee Moster Pontious couldn't resist this picture of snow-and-ice-laden trees against a brilliant blue sky outside the kitchen window.

Kitten Update - January, 2010

Rick and Nancee Moster Pontious are thrilled to announce they've found off-the-farm homes for four new kittens. And Nancee persuaded Rick to add two more kittens to the house menagerie - that makes seven indoor cats ranging in age from five months to 16 years (gulp)! That leaves only one kitten and two mamas in the picking shed office. Now all Nancee needs to do is find a low-cost spaying program for five females (bigger gulp!).

Peanut and Walnut (new names unknown) now bunk with a Mahomet family Rick's daughter, Christina, sent over.

Peanut - who knows what her name is now!

Walnut - who knows what her name is now!

Perchance and Kiddo, now Virgil and Wyatt, bunk with Rick's son, David, and his wife, Megan, in San Antonio.

Perchance - new name is Virgil.

Kiddo - new name is Wyatt.

Pipsqueak and Glacia join Bang, Boom, Shazam, Moonbeam, and Beauty in Rick and Nancee's house.

Pipsqueak and friend - black against brown. We need a better photographer! ;-)

Glacia - have you ever seen a diluted calico before?

That leaves only Spitfire, her mama Sweetie, and other mama Kitkat in the picking office shed.

Spitfire likes to ransack the picking shed office.
